The two last met in Wellball competition at the Knicks Wellball Tournament in April 2025, where Leon Rose, Brian Magid, and Kenny Soffer took down Stephon Marbury, Tim Thomas, and John Wallace in a 30-minute exhibition game.
At first glance, the matchup had every reason to lean toward Team Starbury. It was Stephon Marbury’s first time competing in Wellball, but everyone knew one thing was almost guaranteed: Steph was going to shoot it well. And he did, finishing at 63% from the field, matched by Tim Thomas, who also shot 63%. John Wallace added 49% for Team Starbury.
But Wellball has a way of rewarding more than pure shooting. It rewards timing, chemistry, strategy, pressure, and knowing how to win at The Well.
That day, Leon Rose and company showed exactly that. Brian Magid led the way with a dominant 79% from the field, while Rose shot 58% and Kenny Soffer added 53%. Together, they pulled off the upset and handed Team Starbury a loss in their first Wellball meeting.
Now, the story continues in Margate.
This Fourth of July, the first annual Margate Wellball Classic will feature an 8-team tournament, a championship on the line, and another chapter in one of Wellball’s most intriguing early rivalries. With final rosters for the Fourth still to be announced, all eyes will be on who steps onto The Well, who rises under pressure, and whether Stephon Marbury is ready to flip the narrative.
