New York, NY – April 12, 2026
A new era of basketball innovation is coming to campus as Wellball, widely described as the “pickleball of basketball,” makes its university debut at Fordham University on Sunday, April 12. Led by basketball icon Stephon Marbury, this marks the first time Wellball will be played on a college campus – a milestone moment for the fast-growing sport.
Hosted inside the historic Rose Hill Gymnasium, one of the oldest on-campus arenas in the country, the event blends tradition with innovation, introducing a new sport within a venue that has long been home to Fordham athletics and New York City basketball culture. The day will begin with a 16-team, double-elimination community tournament tipping off at 10:00 AM, featuring teams of three made up exclusively of Fordham students, faculty, staff, and alumni. The tournament highlights Wellball’s inclusive design, allowing the entire Fordham community to compete in a high-energy, pressure-driven format.
At stake is a $10,000 prize for the winning team and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to face Stephon Marbury and his team in the main event. Following the community tournament, the action continues with the Wellball Main Event at approximately 12:30 PM, where the tournament champions will take on Marbury in a head-to-head shooting showdown.
Wellball is a non-contact, merit-based sport centered around shooting under pressure, powered by its innovative rebounding system known as “The Well.” The format enables continuous gameplay and intense, clutch moments that redefine how basketball is played and experienced.
“This is a historic moment not just for Wellball, but for the game of basketball,” said Marbury. “To bring this to a university like Fordham, where community, competition, and culture all come together, is the perfect way to introduce Wellball to the next generation.”
Omar Wellington, founder of Wellball, added: “Bringing Wellball to Fordham University is a powerful step forward in our mission to introduce this sport to the world. There’s no better place than a campus environment to showcase how inclusive, competitive, and exciting Wellball can be. This is about creating a new platform where anyone, regardless of background, can step up, compete, and thrive under pressure.”
The Fordham event represents the first stop in the Wellball Open Tour, as the sport continues to expand across campuses, communities, and global markets.
